Marten Berkman - Remote Sensibility
A variation on “remote sensing,” which is the acquisition of quantitative data from remote locations, Remote Sensibility focuses on the acquisition and subjective interpretation of qualitative “information” about the land.
Using primarily digital image devices and computing mediums, my work explores blurring the boundaries between contemporary urban industrial humans and the remote lands of which we are a part. In digital photo and video collage I can combine the layers of relationship, contradiction and meaning — a more accurate portrait of ourselves.
Web transfer of visual data dissolves the limitations of space and time.
Stereoscopy provides us with an almost tactile encounter with remote geography.
Combined with movement, we encounter a paradox. A simple rocky outcrop, with blades of arctic grass blowing in the wind, brings us to a stillness that may elude us in a manufactured world vying perpetually for our attention.
Does this impression kindle an ancient memory, the one all of our ancient ancestors share, of undivided relationship with the land?
I do not know. But it is where my intuition and sensibility lead me.
Remote Sensibility explores technology and creativity as ecology, to form sensitive relationship between ourselves and the rest of life on earth.
